The Henry George Institute
The Man Behind the Idea
Who was Henry George?
Henry George was an American economist and social reformer born in Philadelphia. After witnessing deep poverty amid booming growth in San Francisco, he dedicated his life to understanding why progress and poverty advance together — and what could be done about it.
His landmark book Progress and Poverty (1879) became one of the best-selling books of the 19th century, proposing a single Land Value Tax to end poverty and unlock human freedom.
"The equal right of all men to the use of land is as clear as their equal right to breathe the air."

Henry George’s bold insight: land value is created by society, not by landlords — so it should benefit everyone, not just those who own it.
