A Lindy Davies Collection for You

GEORGIST JOURNAL (1971-present) addresses the social philosophy, economic analysis, and public policies advocated by Henry George (1839-1897)

a leading Progressive reformer and author of the best-selling Progress and Poverty (1879). George’s influence encompassed the English-speaking world and extended beyond to countries in Europe and Asia. George had a special interest in the well-being of working people. In his analysis, in order for workers, LABOR, to secure their full and just wages, equal access to LAND is essential. Such access is also necessary to realize the promises of LIBERTY. The goal is “association in equality”; and the way to achieve it in a monetized economy is “To abolish all taxation save that upon land values”. This became known around the world as “The Single Tax” – with emphasis on “The”, enthusiasm for “Single”, and Stoic tolerance of “Tax”. Among his contemporaries, Lindy Davies was perhaps the most “orthodox” of Georgist advocates. Readers of this modest selection who are not familiar with Lindy’s writings have a surprising treat in store.
If there is a short-cut to understanding the ideas of Henry George – “the Georgist paradigm” – that short-cut is the work of Lindy Davies. This volume offers a small yet excellent sample. Lindy summed it up best, in his inimitable style, when he wrote:

“Our most important work is to teach justice. Sometimes it’s appropriate, to be sure, to discuss a groovy way of invigorating cities by shifting the property tax. But we must also develop a vision. We must be able to articulate a clear, vibrant conception of what justice is and how it actually works. We must spread that message as quickly and efficiently as we possibly can; we must say it, not just over and over again because we’re in the habit, but with passion.”

People own what they

Produce.

The rest belongs to
all of us.

Henry George’s bold insight: land value is created by society, not by landlords — so it should benefit everyone, not just those who own it.
